Day 1 - Overnight Blue Bay Resort and Spa - D
After lunch in Arusha you'll head to the Arusha Airport for your flight to the beautiful island of Zanzibar. On arrival at Zanzibar, you will be transferred to Blue Bay Resort, a luxury beachfront resort with traditional Swahili charm situated on the finest white, sandy beach on the east coast of the island of Zanzibar.
Day 2 - Overnight Blue Bay Resort and Spa - B, L, D
Today we'll visit the main town of the Zanzibar, historic Stone Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site - many of the winding streets and high townhouses of old remain unchanged. We'll walk between the Sultan’s Palace, the House of Wonders, the Portuguese Fort and gardens, the merchants’ houses and Turkish Baths. We'll visit the markets and see how the locals buy their food. We'll learn how Swahili architecture incorporates elements of Arabic, Persian, Indian, European and African styles. Stone Town is also famous for being the birthplace of the late Freddy Mercury, lead singer of the rock band Queen. After our tour, we'll head to Jozani Forest, the only National Park on Zanzibar and home to the rare red Colobus monkeys and Zanzibar Sykes’ monkey, a species unique to Zanzibar. Here we'll walk through the mangroves, hoping to spot these unique animals while learning about their habitat from a naturalist. After our tour we'll head back to the beach resort where you'll have the rest of the afternoon free to do as you'd like.
Day 3 - Overnight Blue Bay Resort and Spa - B, L, D
Today is a day to do as you choose. Perhaps you'll take advantage the spa at the resort and treat yourself to a massage. Or, perhaps you'll enjoy some of the water sports then just relax by the beach or pool. For an additional fee, you might want to book a snorkeling excursion or perhaps go scuba diving. Two Dog Travel can give you some ideas and take care of the booking for you. Stay busy or do nothing, it's you're day!
Day 4 - Overnight Blue Bay Resort and Spa - B, L, D
Today we'll take a tour of the island and learn of its history and local products. The history of Zanzibar would be incomplete without the cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices which brought the Sultans of Oman and the beginnings of the infamous slave trade. We'll get a detailed description about a variety of spices, and their uses in cooking and cosmetics. Next we'll learn about the culture of the island with a first-hand glimpse at the everyday lives as we visit to two separate and very special villages. We begin in Pwani mchangani where we'll observe the locals and watch how they cultivate seaweed and take it through the stages necessary to get it ready to sell. Our next visit will be to the village of Mchangani. Here the locals will teach us the many uses of coconut products. After our time in the villages it's time to learn of a difficult time in the island's history. We'll visit the Mangapwani Slave Chambers, used for storing hundreds of slaves while awaiting the monsoon period and the arrival of the dhows to ship them away from their homes. After our tour of the island we'll relax for lunch at one of the local beaches before heading back to the resort.
Day 5 - B
Unfortunately it's time to leave this beautiful island and make our way back home. After breakfast, we'll be transferred to the airport for our flight to Dar es Salaam International Airport in time for your flight home.
