NOTE: The tour begins at 3 pm. You should arrive into Athens International Airport no later than 12 noon the day the tour starts, which means if you’re flying from the US, you’ll need to book your outgoing flight for the day before the tour starts. If you prefer to arrrive a day before the tour begins to rest and help get over jet lag, I’m happy to book an extra night at the hotel for you.

Day 1 - D - Athens - Herodion Hotel
After your overnight flight to Athens you will be met at the airport and transferred to our hotel, with rooftop views of the Acropolis, where your Two Dog Travel tour director will be waiting to greet you. If you arrive early in the day, your room may not be ready but the hotel will be happy to store your luggage. Your tour leader will be available to make suggestions on things to do and help get you acquainted with the area. We will all meet in the afternoon and join our local archaeologist/guide for a short walking tour of Athens. Our tour will end at a local restaurant where we will enjoy a welcome dinner and toast to our upcoming Greek adventure.

Day 2 - B, D - Tyros - A traditional seaside hotel
After breakfast and checking out we’ll drive to Tyros, a traditional Greek village sitting on the sea and our home base for the next four nights. En route we’ll stop at the ancient site of Mycenae, the most important and richest palatial centre of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. We’ll explore this amazing site and learn about the life of those who lived here. After our tour you’ll have time to grab a quick lunch before we continue on to Tyros. After checking in at the hotel, you’ll have time to explore this traditional Greek village before meeting back for dinner at one of the local tavernas.

Day 3 - B, L - Tyros - A traditional seaside hotel
Today we’ll enjoy our first hike in the region as we explore some of the ancient paths of the area. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch before heading to another part of the region and walk an acient path to a local moastery built on the edge of the mountain.  It’s sure to be a day to remember as we learn about the life of the people both in modern and ancient times. After our day of hiking you’ll be free to enjoy the evening as you’d like.

Day 4 - B, D - Tyros - A traditional seaside hotel
After breakfast we’ll drive down the coast to the Medieval castle town of Monemvasia. Located on the southeastern side of Peloponnese, Monemvasia was entirely carved on the backside of a sea rock. This huge rock is not visible from the mainland so that the locals could avoid enemy attacks. We’ll explore this amazing place, climbing the many steps to the upper portion of the town where we’ll enjoy some amazing views. After our short tour, you’ll have free time for lunch and to wander on your own before we make our way back to Tyros. In the evening we’ll enjoy dinner together at another local taverna.

Day 5 - B, L, D - Tyros - A traditional seaside hotel
We’ll spend another day exploring this beautiful area of Greece as we hike more ancient paths.  We’ll stop for a picnic lunch en route before continuing with our hike. In the evening we’ll drive up the mountain to a local taverna where we’ll have dinner

Day 6 - B, D - Nafplio - Grand Serai Hotel
Today we’ll check out of our hotel and drive to another beautiful seaside town of Nafplio, said by some to be the most beautiful village in Greece. After checking into our hotel located in the Old Town, you’ll have the rest of the afternoon to explore this charming town. Perhaps you’ll choose to climb the nearly 1000 steps up to the Palamidi Fortress, built by the Venetians during the second Venetian occupation of the area (1686-1715). Or, you might choose to explore the narrow passages of the Old Town doing some shopping or just sitting along the seafront enjoying the view.  Later in the day we’ll meet back up for an evening of entertainment and food. Dancing is a huge part of the Greek culture and tonite we’ll have the opportunity to watch a professsional dance group as we eat our traditional souvlaki meal. After the group has performed their traditional dances it will be time to join in on the fun, if you choose. We’ll learn some of the dances and feel a bit of that true Greek philoxenia.

Day 7 - B, L - Nafplio - Grand Serai Hotel
Today it’s time to get out and walk as we take a path that follows the sea. We’ll stop at some beautiful beaches along the way before arriving at a quaint chapel sitting along the sea. You may choose to stop at a local beachside taverna for lunch or lounge on the beach before returning to town. You'll have the rest of the day free to enjoy as you’d like.

Day 8 - B, L - Nafplio - Grand Serai Hotel
After breakfast, we’ll get off the beaten path as we visit a small traditional village. We’ll meet a family of cheesemakers who have been making their high quality products for over 70 years. We’ll have an opportunity to learn how they make their famous cheeses and try several that you might not have heard of: mizithra, dry gruyere, manouri-mizithra, and of course, feta. We’ll learn to make a few traditional Greek dishes before sitting down to lunch with the family. During our lunch we'll meet Dimitri, a local winemaker. He'll teach us about his wine and, of course, we'll enjoy it with our meal. Next, we’ll explore a couple of caves in the area before leaving this pastoral village. After returning to Nafplio, you’ll have the evening free to enjoy as you’d like.

Day 9 - B, D - Dimitsana - Thisoa Hotel Arcadia
After breakfast we’ll check out and make our way to the beautiful mountain village of Dimitsana. Upon arrival into Dimitsana we’ll visit the unique Open Air Water Power Museum. Focusing on the main pre-industrial techniques that take advantage of water to produce a variety of goods, it links them to the history and daily life of the local society over the ages. After our visit you'll have some free time to grab lunch and explore the quaint town. Later in the evening we’ll enjoy a wonderful dinner at the hotel..

Day 10 - B, L - Dimitsana - Thisoa Hotel Arcadia
This morning we’ll meet our hiking guides and transfer to the starting point of our hike. We’ll make our way through the beautiful Lousios Gorge with its river of crystal clear water. Along the way we’ll stop to visit the amazing Monastery of Prodromos, which seems to be hanging from the cliff. We’ll also visit the ancient site of Gortys, thought to be from the 4th century BC. Throughout our hike we’ll be awed by the beauty surrounding us with its cliffs and majestic views. We’ll end our hike with a picnic lunch before heading back to Dimitsana where you’ll have the rest of the evening free.

Day 11 - B, D - Athens - Herodion Hotel
After breakfast, we’ll check out and drive back to Athens. Along the way,  we’ll stop at the entry point of the amazing Corinth Canal, an engineeering marvel, where you can take some pictures and grab a coffee or snack. After arriving into Athens and checking into the hotel, we will be joined by our archaeologist/guide for an afternoon tour of the crowning glory of Athens, the Acropolis. After our tour, we’ll meet up with a friend of mine and spend our last evening in Greece exploring some of the places where local Greeks eat. We’ll have dinner at a local taverna, talking with Athenians and reminiscing about our wonderful time in Greece.

Day 12 - B
Unfortunately, it’s time to leave this beautiful country. After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport according to your flight schedule.
