NOTE: Leadville is the highest incorporated town in the US and sits at over 10,000 feet in elevation. It’s important to drink extra water for several days before arriving and while you’re in Leadville. Also, it's importatant to take it easy the first day. If you have trouble with altitude sickness, it might be a good idea to come to Denver a day early. Two Dog Travel can book a hotel for you and plan activities in Denver.
The tour starts and ends at Denver International Airport. Two Dog Travel will set up one airport transfer to and from Leadville at a time that works best with everyone’s flights. If you need a separate private transfer, Two Dog Travel will set it up for you at an additional cost.
Do you like fishing? Are you interested in adding an extra day or two for some fly fishing on the famous Arkansas River, one of the premiere fishing areas in the nation? Let Two Dog Travel know and we'll make all the arrangements.
Day 1 - Overnight in Leadville - D
Upon arrival to Denver Airport a transfer will be waiting for the group to transfer everyone to Leadville. After checking into our accommodations and depending on arrival time, we will visit a local museum or enjoy a welcome drink at the historic Silver Dollar Saloon followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 2 - Overnight in Leadville - B, L
After breakfast, we’ll enjoy the incredible mountain scenery as we ride the historic Leadville Southern Colorado train. We’ll ride high above the floor of the Arkansas Valley to the Continental Divide. After our first taste of the mountains we’ll return to town for lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon we’ll visit the famous Matchless Mine, the richest silver mine of the time. In 1879, silver tycoon, Horace Tabor, purchased the mine, an investment that brought in $2 billion by today’s standards. After our adventures you’ll be free to enjoy Leadville as you’d like..
Day 3 - Overnight in Leadville - B, L
After breakfast we’ll head out to the Historic Leadville Fish Hatchery where we’ll learn about the work they’ve been doing for over 100 years. They are currently rearing Snake River cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and greenback cutthroat trout to fill needs throughout Colorado. We’ll enjoy our first easy hike on the nature trail of the fish hatchery where we’ll see the site of the Evergreen Lakes Hotel, built during the mining boom days and the location of The Unsinkable Molly Brown’s wedding breakfast. Next we’ll head to beautiful Twin Lakes where we’ll stop for lunch at a historic saloon and inn. After lunch we’ll board a boat for a private scenic narrated tour of Twin Lakes. The tour includes the upper and lower glacially formed lakes and a tour of the historic Interlaken resort, established in the late 1800’s as a getaway for wealthy mining tycoons. After making it across the lake you have the choice of either returning by boat or enjoying a longer hike starting at the Interlaken Resort and following along the shore of the lake. After our fun day outside, we’ll return to Leadville where the rest of the evening will be free.
Day 4 - Overnight in Leadville - B, D
Today is a day of adventure when after breakfast we’ll head to Buena Vista, one of the premiere whitewater rafting and kayaking towns in the world. We’ll suit up and enjoy a half day of riding the rapids among the excellent scenery. After we’re done rafting, we’ll stop for lunch before heading back to Leadville. Is rafting not your thing? Perhaps you prefer horseback riding? If so, let us know and we will set this up for you instead. In the afternoon you have the option of visiting the National Mining Hall of Fame and the famous historic Tabor Opera House or you can go for a bike ride around the 11.5- mile Mineral Belt Trail, one of Colorado’s highest and most spectacular paved pathways.
